A Minecraft server icon must be exactly 64x64 pixels in resolution. Images with larger or smaller dimensions will not load and will be ignored by the Java Edition server on startup.
The image file must be named exactly server-icon.png in all lowercase letters. Any other filename, capitalization variation like Server-Icon.png, or alternate extension will prevent the server from displaying the icon.
Place the server-icon.png file directly into the server root directory alongside server.properties and the server jar file. It will not load if placed inside the world folder or other subdirectories.
Yes, the icon must be in PNG format to load correctly in Minecraft Java Edition. Other image formats such as JPEG or animated GIF are unsupported, though standard transparency channels in PNG files work.
You must restart the server after uploading the file, then refresh the multiplayer menu by pressing F5. The client caches icons locally, so restarting the client or reconnecting forces the new icon to display.
