Spawn Proofing Calculator

Find how far apart to place torches so no hostile mob can spawn, using the exact block-light rule from Java Edition.

Top-down view of a 25×25 floor with one light source at the center. Adjust the spacing above to see gaps appear once you space sources farther apart than the max safe spacing.

Uses the real vanilla taxicab (Manhattan) light-falloff rule: light drops by exactly 1 per block of |dx|+|dz| distance from the source. Multi-torch grid spacing assumes a single consistent light source type placed at every grid point — mixing source types or accounting for ceiling height/other obstructions isn’t modeled here.

Quick guides

How to use this tool, and the questions players ask most.

What light level is needed to spawn proof an area?

Since version 1.18, standard hostile Overworld mobs only spawn at block light level 0, meaning a light level of 1 or higher prevents spawns. The Spawn Proofing Calculator uses this rule to map torch layouts across flat ground.

What blocks are spawn proof in Minecraft without light?

Hostile mobs cannot spawn on transparent or partial blocks such as bottom-half slabs, minecraft:glass, carpets, and buttons. Placing water sources or layering surfaces with minecraft:leaves also prevents all mob spawns without requiring any light source.

How do you spawn proof a Nether fortress?

Blazes spawn at block light levels up to 11, while Wither skeletons require block light 0. Cover all fortress walkway surfaces with bottom-half slabs or maintain a block light level of 12 or higher using light sources like minecraft:shroomlight.

How to spawn proof against spiders in Minecraft?

Spiders require a clear 3x3x1 block footprint centered on the spawn location to generate. Placing obstructions such as buttons, levers, or minecraft:fence posts spaced every 2 blocks prevents the required surface area from forming.

Can drowned spawn in flowing water in Minecraft?

Drowned cannot spawn in flowing water; they only generate in natural water source blocks at block light level 0. Converting water sources into flowing streams or lighting underwater floors to light level 1 or above stops drowned spawns.
