Use the command /experience add @s 30 levels or /xp 30L to grant levels directly. To remove levels, supply a negative value such as /experience add @s -5 levels, or use the set argument to define an exact level.
The highest displayable experience level in Java Edition is 24791, which requires 2147483647 total experience points to reach the 32-bit signed integer limit. Gaining experience beyond this threshold causes the integer counter to overflow into negative values.
Dropped experience orbs despawn after 6000 game ticks, which is exactly 5 minutes in loaded chunks. Like item entities, the despawn timer pauses whenever the chunk containing the orbs is unloaded.
The Ender Dragon drops 12000 experience points upon its first defeat, making it the highest single source in the game. Subsequent dragon kills drop 500 points, while the Wither drops 50 points and the Warden drops 5 points.
Experience points will not increase your level bar if you hold or wear damaged gear enchanted with Mending. Each experience orb repairs 2 points of durability per experience point before any remaining XP goes toward your level counter.
