A texture replaces the vanilla one at its own path, so the file name is the part that matters and the editor keeps it for you.

Quick guides

How to use this tool, and the questions players ask most.

What does 16x mean in texture packs?

It means each block face is composed of a 16x16 pixel grid, matching the default resolution of vanilla Minecraft textures like stone.png. Higher resolutions like 32x32 or 64x64 double or quadruple the pixel count per block side.

Do texture packs make Minecraft slower?

Standard 16x16 texture packs do not lower framerates because they match the default vanilla asset memory usage. Performance drops occur primarily with higher resolutions like 128x128 or 512x512, which require significantly more VRAM.

Can you mix texture packs in Minecraft?

Yes, Minecraft loads multiple resource packs hierarchically from top to bottom in the Selected list. Assets in the top pack take priority, so placing a pack containing only diamond_sword.png above another pack overrides only that specific item.

Why won't my Minecraft texture pack work?

A resource pack fails to load if pack.mcmeta is missing or if the pack_format integer is incorrect, such as 46 for version 1.21.4. Files must also be placed directly inside assets/minecraft/textures/ without an extra enclosing directory.

How to make a 16x texture pack in Minecraft?

Create a root folder containing a valid pack.mcmeta file and your edited 16x16 PNG files inside assets/minecraft/textures/. Texture Maker generates this structure automatically by writing modified textures into the exact file paths required by Java Edition.
