Block states define dynamic variations of a single block ID, such as the facing direction of a minecraft:furnace or the age property of wheat crops spanning from 0 to 7, without creating separate block IDs.
You change block states using the /setblock command by appending bracketed properties, such as /setblock ~ ~ ~ minecraft:campfire[lit=false], or by right-clicking blocks with a minecraft:debug_stick in Creative mode.
In Bedrock Edition, block states are modified in commands by specifying state keys in brackets, such as /setblock ~ ~ ~ oak_log ["pillar_axis"="x"], which replaced the legacy numerical data value system in update 1.19.70.
Exclusive to Bedrock and Education editions, minecraft:allow permits players without world-builder status to place or mine blocks in the column above it, while minecraft:deny restricts all placing and breaking in the entire column above its position.
There are over 15000 unique valid block state combinations in Java Edition across more than 900 registered block IDs, with every state cataloged in the internal registries.json data registry generated by the server.
