What is an mrpack file in Minecraft?

An .mrpack is Modrinth's modpack format, which stores configuration files and a modrinth.index.json manifest with SHA-512 hashes and download URLs for mods. Launchers use this manifest to fetch mod jars during installation instead of bundling heavy archives.

How do I install an mrpack file in Minecraft?

Import the .mrpack file directly into Modrinth App or Prism Launcher by clicking Add Instance and selecting Import from zip. Launchers parse the manifest and install the required Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge loader automatically.

Where do I put mrpack files in Minecraft?

You do not put .mrpack files into the standard .minecraft/mods folder because the vanilla launcher cannot read them. They must be imported into compatible launchers or converted into loose files using the MRPACK to ZIP Converter.

How do I unpack an mrpack file manually?

Rename the .mrpack extension to .zip and extract it using standard archive tools to access modrinth.index.json and the overrides directory. To get the actual mod jars, each download URL listed inside the JSON manifest must be fetched separately.

Can I use an mrpack file on a Minecraft

server?

Dedicated servers cannot run an .mrpack directly since the server executable only reads jar files from the mods directory. You must extract the modpack contents and download all server-compatible jars defined for loader versions like Fabric 0.16.0 or Forge.
