Turn item counts into stacks, chests and shulker boxes, and work out how long a redstone circuit takes in game ticks, redstone ticks and seconds.
How to use this tool, and the questions players ask most.
In Minecraft 1.20.5 and 1.21, you can modify an item's stack limit up to 99 using the max_stack_size component. For example, run /give @p diamond[max_stack_size=99] to create a custom stack.
Notch chose 64 because it is 2^6, a power of two that fit neatly within a signed 8-bit byte while leaving room for inventory metadata. Stacking to 64 prevents oversized inventory data packets in Java multiplayer.
Items like ender pearls, snowballs, eggs, buckets, signs, and honey bottles cap at 16 items per slot. This restriction balances throwable projectiles and vehicle transport to prevent rapid spamming without inventory management.
A single chest holds 27 stacks, which equals 1,728 items for items that stack to 64. A full double chest holds 54 stacks, or 3,456 items, which is what this page calculates.
One redstone tick equals exactly 2 game ticks, which corresponds to 0.1 seconds in real time at standard 20 TPS. Standard redstone repeaters can add delays of 1, 2, 3, or 4 redstone ticks.
