Blocks used

Upload an image to see which blocks make up the map art, sorted by how much of the image they cover.

Matches each pixel to the nearest of Minecraft’s real 62 base map colors. This tool only quantizes to that single base shade per block (real in-game map art also uses 3 extra brightness levels per color via block height “staircasing” for a wider effective palette) — so it’s the real color set, but a flat single-shade rendering rather than a full staircase planner.

Quick guides

How to use this tool, and the questions players ask most.

How big is a standard Minecraft map for map art?

A standard level 0/4 map covers a 128x128 block area, requiring exactly 16,384 blocks placed horizontally. Each pixel on the resulting map item corresponds to one block column within those chunk boundaries.

How do you align map art boundaries in Minecraft?

Map grids snap to fixed world coordinates in multiples of 128 blocks, with the origin map centered at X: -64, Z: -64. Press F3 to verify that your canvas perimeter matches the map coordinates before placing blocks.

How to copy and lock map art in Minecraft?

Combine your completed map with a Glass Pane inside a Cartography Table to lock the image permanently against terrain changes. To clone the locked artwork, place the locked map alongside an Empty Map in the crafting grid.

How to import map art into a Minecraft world?

Export the layout as a .schem or .nbt file and place it into the .minecraft/schematics folder. Mods such as Litematica load the holographic blueprint directly into your world to guide block placement in survival mode.

How does map art work in Minecraft Bedrock Edition?

Bedrock Edition map art uses the same 128x128 block grid when initialized using an Empty Map crafted from 9 Paper. However, color palettes vary slightly from Java Edition because Bedrock assigns different base colors to select terracotta and wood blocks.
