How the numbers are worked out

Every formula this page uses, and the questions players ask most.

How does Minecraft turn a word into a seed?

If what you type reads as a whole number inside the Java long range the game uses it exactly. Anything else goes through Java’s String.hashCode(), which returns a 32-bit number — so Minecraft becomes -1595926131.

Do two different words ever give the same Minecraft world?

Yes. String.hashCode() maps every possible phrase onto only 232 values, so collisions exist. Type the number instead if you want all 264 seeds.

How many ticks are in a Minecraft day?

24,000 game ticks, which is twenty real minutes. Day runs from tick 0 to 12,000, and the clock starts at 06:00.

What is a redstone tick in Minecraft?

Two game ticks, so a tenth of a second. A repeater on its first setting is one redstone tick; on its fourth it is four, which is 0.4 seconds.

How do you get the decimal colour for leather armour?

Multiply out red × 65536 + green × 256 + blue. Deep green #4B8B2E is 4950830, which goes straight into dyed_color.

What time is midday in Minecraft?

Tick 6000 is noon and tick 18000 is midnight. /time set 6000 puts the sun overhead.
